Weekly Wine Notes From Brian Kemmerle

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Please note that we will not be offering A Bottle Among Friends wine specials this Thursday (check back next week for the December 2 wine list). We will  be providing a delicious feast for our annual Thanksgiving Buffet from 12pm-6pm on Thursday, November 25, 2010. We encourage you to make reservations by calling 503.779.1660.

Bentley’s Wine Steward, Brian Kemmerle regularly offers his insight and experience to help select the perfect wine to accompany Chef Derek Ridgway’s dishes. Here are Brian’s Thanksgiving Day Buffet wine suggestions:

Stick to fruity and floral whites like; Riesling or Pinot Gris, the more adventurous should try Gewurztraminer, Viognier and Semillon.   As for reds; Pinot Noir makes for a good choice especially the warmer 2006 or 2009 vintage, Washington’s “other” reds like Sangiovese or Grenache and California Zinfandel are also good choices.

Stay away from Chardonnay, especially the more oak’d versions and the more tannic, darker fruited reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah the flavors all tend to clash with the sweet, salty and savory flavors of Thanksgiving dinner.

Featured Pairing of the Week

I must be in a Rhone state of mind here at Bentley’s now with two wines by the glass inspired by … dreams of southern France. This week I’ve added from the Horse Heaven Hills in Washington the 2008 Domaine Pouillon Katydid Red Blend; it’s a bug reference.

This wine is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. It has a nose of curry spices, red fruits and fennel, a nice full body on the mid-palate with dried cherries and soft tannins on the finish. Some freshness from the acidity that carries the flavors for about 15 seconds after you swallow. Try this one with a pan seared or oven roasted duck breast and fruited basmati rice.  Cheers! -Brian
