Since Earth Day is just around the corner, we thought this would be the perfect time to talk about Bentley’s commitment to sustainability. We truly believe that sustainable practices are better for our guests, our team, our local community, and our planet. Since opening our doors in 2005, Bentley’s has worked hard to ensure we are doing our part to minimize our carbon footprint to preserve precious natural resources for future generations to enjoy.
Bentley’s was the first restaurant in Salem to receive certification from Marion County as an EarthWISE business, a program that recognizes local businesses that have made a commitment to environmentally friendly practices. To obtain EarthWISE certification, a business must meet criteria for recycling, waste reduction and prevention, environmentally preferable purchasing, energy efficiency and conservation, and water pollution prevention.
To this day, our team remains committed to exploring new opportunities to better conserve and reuse our valuable resources. We demonstrate this commitment by implementing the following eco-friendly practices into our operations:
Implementing a Robust Recycling Program
When we say we are committed to recycling, we absolutely mean it. We cut down on garbage as much as possible by recycling all paper, glass, tin, aluminum, and cardboard. We also strive to find alternative uses for items not recyclable (like donating materials to local organizations). Utilizing recycled paper for all printed materials.
Buying Local Healthy Ingredients
When possible, we source our ingredients from local vendors and growers. By buying local, Bentley’s Grill supports the local economy and long-term sustainability.
Replacing Garbage Cans with Recycling and Composting Cans
Instead of one-dump-fits-all garbage cans, we use recycling and composting cans to separate our trash, ensuring that every bit of waste is placed into its proper receptacle. It’s only when the trash is separated accordingly does it becomes clear how much extra waste is created every single day.
Creating a Waste-free House Front
We strive to keep the front of the house as close to waste-free as possible. To this endeavor, all tickets, straws, bottles, napkins, corks, and other waste are either recycled or composted.
Training our Team to Ensure Sustainable Practices
It takes a team to create meaningful change and we educate our employees in responsible recycling procedures on a regular basis.
It doesn’t stop there. The Salem Convention Center and the Grand Hotel Salem are also actively involved in creating a waste-free and sustainable facility for all to enjoy. So Happy Earth Day from all of us on “The Salem Block”! May we all learn how to be better stewards of this beautiful planet and preserve it for many generations to come.
